Divine Mercy Sunday Plenary Indulgence Overview
A plenary indulgence (remission of all temporal punishment due to sin) is available on Divine Mercy Sunday (second Sunday of Easter). To obtain it, Catholics must have sacramental confession, Eucharistic Communion, pray for the Pope's intentions, and participate in devotions to Divine Mercy.
Special Divine Mercy Grace: According to St. Faustina’s revelations, Jesus promised a "special grace" on this day that goes beyond a standard plenary indulgence: the complete wiping away of both all sins and all punishment, similar to a new baptism. This special grace requires only that you receive Holy Communion worthily, trust in His mercy, and be in a state of grace.
Key Requirements for a Plenary Indulgence:
-
Sacramental Confession: Can be done within 20 days before or after.
-
Eucharistic Communion: Preferably on Divine Mercy Sunday.
-
Prayer for the Pope's Intentions: Often satisfied by one Our Father and one Hail Mary, or other prayers.
-
Detachment from Sin: Heart must be detached from all sin, including venial sin.
-
Specific Act: Take part in prayers/devotions in honor of Divine Mercy in a church, or visit the Blessed Sacrament exposed or reserved, reciting the Our Father and the Creed, plus a devout invocation (e.g., "Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!").
What if I am Sick or Unable to Attend?
-
Those who cannot attend church can still obtain the indulgence by offering prayers and sufferings to God, with the intention of completing the above conditions as soon as possible.
